So, in celebration of National Sausage Roll Day on June 5, Otway Pork asked its fans to share their top tips for taking this classic snack to new heights.
The response to our social media call-out was phenomenal, with fans sharing their secret ingredients and methods, developed over years, handed down through generations, introduced from international cuisines … all tested and all held tightly guarded. Until now.
We’ve mined the hundreds of responses to bring you the top 10 recipes from Otway Pork fans on how to take your sausage roll to the next level.
Tip 1: Fresh grated apple: For one home cook, the secret is balancing savoury and sweet by grating in fresh apple. They swear by this addition to balance the savoury sausage roll filling, especially as it comes into prime apple season this winter.
Tip 2: Fennel seeds: Many fans have turned to robust spices for an unexpected kick to the sausage roll. Fennel seeds, prized for their distinctive anise flavour, is a novel choice.
Tip 3: Curry powder: For others, it’s a dash of curry powder for extra kick.
Tip 4: Worcestershire sauce:One BBQ guru says the real game-changer is Worcestershire sauce. He adds a few dashes both in the filling and as a dipping sauce.
Tip 5: Caramelised onion: Another tip to make the humble sausage roll a game-changer is to fold deeply caramelised onions into the filling instead of raw.
