Sweet meets savoury in every bite of this elevated toasted sandwich.

Thin ribbons of smoky ham are nestled between layers of creamy melted cheese and a bright, juicy hit of apple sauce that cuts through the richness with crisp fruit‑fresh sweetness.

Grilled until the bread is golden and the cheese oozes, each mouthful delivers a playful contrast of textures and flavours. It is comforting and familiar, yet unexpectedly delicious.

Ideal for a quick lunch with a twist or a grown‑up after‑school snack, this sandwich turns humble ingredients into something that truly sings.

Ingredients

  • 4 slices sourdough bread (or bread of your choice)

  • Butter, for spreading

  • Mayonnaise, for spreading

  • Dijon or American mustard, for spreading

  • ¼ cup apple sauce

  • 200g Otway Ham

  • 4 Swiss cheese slices

  • Olive oil spray or oil

  • Dill pickles, to serve

Method

  1. Place bread onto a board. Spread with butter, mayonnaise and mustard.

  2. Dividing ingredients evenly, top 2 slices of bread with apple sauce, ham and cheese. Season with salt and pepper. Top, mustard-side down, with the remaining bread. Lightly spray or brush with oil.

  3. Heat a large non-stick pan over medium-low heat. Add sandwiches and cook, lightly pressing occasionally with a cooking slide, for 5-6 minutes on each side until golden and the cheese has melted.

  4. Serve immediately with dill pickles.
